In an investigative feature on Oregon’s approach and follow-through on glass recycling, reporter Hannah Wallace of Oregon Business Magazine features Revino’s bottles as one of the solutions to Oregon’s glass recycling crisis.
She reports that Oregon enacted America's first bottle bill in 1971, pioneering extended producer responsibility, and now leads the nation in recycling rates. Despite its success, the glass recycling landscape faces challenges, especially for items without a deposit, like wine bottles. With glass accounting for 29% of wine's carbon footprint, sustainable alternatives are crucial.
She positions Revino as a game-changer in the wine industry. Co-founded by Keenan O'Hern and Adam Rack, Revino aims to introduce a refillable wine bottle program in Oregon's Willamette Valley by 2024. Designed in collaboration with O-I Glass, Revino's lightweight bottles offer an environmentally friendly alternative for winemakers seeking local, sustainable options.
Revino's program involves regular collection routes, incentivizing wineries to embrace refillable bottles. With support from influential Willamette Valley brands like Bethel Heights, Winderlea, and Adelsheim, Revino aims to revolutionize the wine industry's packaging practices. Winderlea plans “to start using Revino bottles for a few select wines they sell in the testing room, but hope to go big as Revino grows. ‘It would be our goal that 100% of our glass will be in refillable,’ Bill Sweat says.”
Amid rising glass prices, Revino's approach aligns with environmental and financial sustainability. The refillable model not only reduces the carbon footprint but also offers wineries a cost-effective solution. As Oregon moves towards the Recycling Modernization Act in 2025, Revino exemplifies a forward-thinking, sustainable solution to the glass recycling problem, fostering a circular economy in the wine industry and beyond.
